. ARRESTED ON SUSPICION OF BEING A PRUSSIAN SPY, STORY IN WHITBY GAZETTE DATED 31-12-1870, MASTER OF BRIG SANCHO AT THE TIME. SUPPOSEDLEY OWNED THE BORDEAUX ALONG WITH A JOSEPH BOVILL ( PART OWNER AND SHIPS HUSBAND ) WHO DECAMPED WITH MONEY ( APPROX 1870 ) "EMERTON"- BOVILL SCARPED WITH SHIP'S MONEY. Joseph Bovill was born 1815 in Whitby North Yorkshire, the same age as William. and was thought to have jointly owned a ship to-gether, either the Emerton or the Bordeaux, like William he was living in Church Street in 1841 -1851, in 1841 he was a Joiner to trade, but appears as a Ship owner in 1851, 1861, 1871 and 1881. In 1861 - 1871 he had moved the family house to Esk Terrace, Whitby with his family. In 1881 he had moved to Ugglebarnby, 7 Sleights Hill, He had been thought by the Nelson Family to have vanished approx 1870 's with the ships money. In 1881he was still a ship owner, and he died in 1890.Whitby area Have since found out that it was the "Lyra" that Joseph and William owned ( documented on "the Ancient port of Whitby " )in 1865, William continued to sail in Joseph's ships after 1865, so I don't think there is much credence in this tale. |
