Obituary, in The Helensburgh and Gareloch Times 12th July 1944;
as follows;
Referring to the great loss sustained by Park Church in the death of one of its elders, James Hunter Sharpe, the minister (Rev J.A.Turner Kennedy) paid the following tribute at the forenoon service on Sunday, July 9 th.
"His association with Park Church as an office bearer dates back almost to the commencement of my own ministry in this charge. He was one of four whom I ordained and inducted to the eldership in November 1938. In all my experience I have known few men who filled that office more honourably or more competently. He took his duties with high seriousness.He did whatever was required of him cheerfully and painstakingly. With the true pastoral instinct he took a deep and affectionate interest in the famlies of the district assigned to him, giving special care to the sick and infirm. Many times I have heard them speak of his visits with heartfelt appreciation and gratitude.
' Among his fellow office-bearers he was held in the highest respect. His shrewd judgment, his fine spiritual outlook, his genial tolerance, his unfailing good humour, made him a real asset to the Kirk Session. We honour his memory as a brother beloved.
'To his fellow members he was an example of real christian devotion. He loved the Church, and while health permitted, attended public worship regulary both morning and evening ; took a lively interest in all that pertained to its welfare; contributed generously to every good cause ; and above all lived the life of testimony befitting his high office.
' Others can speak with more inside knowledge of his business acum and integrity which established him in the confidence of a very wide circle, but as his minister I gladly bear testimony to his fine Christian character. He not only held the faith, he lived it out, humbly, sincerely, radiantly; and sure I am ,that when he passed over ' the trumpets sounded for him on the otherside ' But his passing will be mourned by none so much as his family circle by whom he was greatly beloved. By our own sense of loss we may touch the finge of their grief, and so today we express to them our sincere and heartfelt sympathy, and pray that the God and Father of us all may make all Grace to abound to them, and uphold them in his strength ' till the day breaks and the shadows flee away'
